2024 Dutch Energy Storage Market Opportunities and Innovations
The Netherlands is a European innovation leader in energy storage, driven by the growth of renewable energy and increasing electrification. The Dutch Ministry of Economic Affairs has published an Energy Storage Roadmap outlining actions to promote power storage, including battery, electrochemical, mechanical, molecular (e.g., hydrogen, ammonia), and thermal storage systems. These technologies play a key role in balancing supply and demand, seasonal storage, and strategic reserves. Policies and incentives include fiscal support, R&D investment, regulations and standards, and public awareness campaigns. TenneT expects around 9GW of energy storage to be connected to the grid by 2030. The Dutch Science and Technology Office supports innovative enterprises, research institutes, and government agencies to jointly address global challenges and develop key technologies.
