PCS and EMS Solutions for Flow Battery Energy Storage Systems
This document presents comprehensive solutions for Power Conversion Systems (PCS) and Energy Management Systems (EMS) tailored to flow battery energy storage. It first details the electrical parameters of various flow battery types—all-vanadium, all-iron, zinc-bromine, and zinc-iron—highlighting their common characteristics: low voltage and high current, support for zero-volt start, and significant differences from lithium batteries. Four main PCS solutions are then introduced: the string solution using multiple ACDC modules in parallel for modularity and safety; the distributed solution combining DCDC and PCS for group battery connection and high efficiency; the resistor soft start solution that uses a resistor for precharge and then bypasses it; and the precharge DCDC solution employing a DCDC module for controlled startup. Each solution is compared in terms of voltage range, cost, and suitability. The EMS section summarizes these solutions, emphasizing their adaptability to different flow battery voltages and system requirements. The document aims to guide selection of optimal PCS/EMS configurations for flow battery energy storage systems, ensuring safety, efficiency, and cost-effectiveness.
